Tracking Money as Learning
A finance journaling note on using simple records to understand behavior and tradeoffs.
Tracking money is useful when it changes behavior. A perfect spreadsheet that I avoid is worse than a rough system I actually maintain.
The first goal is visibility:
- What came in?
- What went out?
- What was planned?
- What was emotional or avoidable?
- What needs attention next month?
I am not trying to turn every purchase into guilt. The point is to understand tradeoffs. Money records are feedback, not a moral scorecard.
The system should stay small enough to review weekly. If it takes too long, I will simplify categories before adding more detail.
