Finishing a book and remembering a book are different things. I want my reading notes to help me think.

For now, I keep a small routine after each reading session:

  • Summarize one idea in my own words.
  • Write one question I still have.
  • Note a page or chapter so I can find the passage again.
  • Record whether the idea changes anything I do.

A few thoughtful notes are easier to revisit than a long collection of highlights.

My reading entry template

For future entries, I will record the title, author, edition, and reading dates. Then I will separate the author’s argument from my own response. Page references will help me check that I have represented the idea fairly.

The notebook is a conversation with what I read. It can hold disagreement, uncertainty, and a reason to return to the book later.
